The Marvellous Musical Machine: Consent Form

In order for participants under the age of 18 to take part in this project we must have the consent of a parent or carer.

Please read the project description below carefully. Once you’ve reviewed the details, complete the form to provide the necessary permissions. You’ll also have the opportunity to give any additional (optional) consents you and your child are happy with.

The Project

The Marvellous Musical Machine is a creative and collaborative project where children and young people will use physical computing and everyday objects to design and build unique musical machines.

As part of the project, participants will take part in activities such as (but not limited to):

  • Learning basic physical computing and coding techniques, for example using micro:bits
  • Exploring and experimenting with found objects to discover interesting sounds
  • Collaborating in small groups to brainstorm ideas and solve creative challenges
  • Sketching or prototyping their instrument designs before building
  • Designing and constructing homemade musical instruments
  • Coding their instruments to play or trigger sounds, chords, or simple tunes
  • Testing and refining their instruments to improve how they work or sound
  • Creating group compositions or soundscapes using their musical machines
  • Reflecting on their work through discussion, drawing, or journaling
  • (Optional) Sharing their musical machines in informal presentations to teachers, parents, or peers
  • (Optional) Appearing in short “how-to” videos documenting how the instruments were made and played
  • (Optional) Helping to document the project — for example, through photos, captions, or display materials for a final showcase

Copyright and Creative Owndership

All participants retain full copyright in the creative work they produce during the project. This includes any writing, drawings, designs, code, music, and other original content. They also retain their moral rights, which means:

  • Their work cannot be used without their permission
  • They must be credited as the creator
  • Their work must not be used in a way that could harm their reputation

This also applies to any unique designs or creative contributions made when building their musical machines.

To take part in the project, each participant must enter into a licence agreement that gives us permission to use their work. This licence allows us to use their work in a variety of ways — for example:

  • Sharing their musical machines with other pupils, schools, and the general public
  • Including their work in teaching materials and educational resources
  • Creating and publishing videos, including on social media and websites
  • Featuring their work in exhibitions, events, and project documentation

These uses are examples only and do not limit the ways their work may be shared in connection with the project, always with appropriate credit and care.

We ask for your consent for your child to enter into this agreement. (The Licence Agreement is provided on a separate form.)
